Victorian Steam

This tutorial was written by me on January 30, 2021. The results are of my own imagination.  Any resemblance to another tutorial is purely coincidental.

Please DO NOT claim this tutorial as your own.

This was written assuming you have a working knowledge of PS.

Please keep in mind that I write the tutorial as I am creating it.

Sometimes I may not explain properly where to place things so please see my example if you are ever in doubt :)

Supplies needed

I am using Adobe Photoshop 2021 but this tutorial should work with any version.

You can download the 7 day trial of PS here.

PTU Tube:  I am using Fiodorova Maria's beautiful tube "Stimpak Love".  Please do not use this tube without a proper license. You can purchase this tube at VM Artists here.

PTU Kit:  I am using a gorgeous kit called "Victorian Steam" created by Tiny Turtle Designs.  You can purchase this beautiful kit here.

Mask:  361 by Mizteeques. Thank you for your awesome masks.  You can download it from her blog here. I am using the png versions for this tutorial.

My Word Art here.  Left click to enlarge then right click and save as

Font of choice for your name.

Plug in: None

Drop shadow of choice.

Please read all the Artist's/Designer's TOU.

To open an image, I click on the element or paper in the file folder and drag it into PS.

To transfer an element or paper in PS to my tag, I left click and drag it into my working canvas.
The other way is to left click and drag the element from the folder right onto your tag.

Either way you will get the same results but the resizing will be different :).  I will be using the both method for this tutorial.

For resizing and rotating I use the Ctrl+T command.

To mirror or Flip go to Edit>Transform>Flip Horizontal (mirror) or Flip vertical (Flip).

Let's get started.

Open a new 800x800 transparent image.  We will resize later.

Go to layers, New fill layer, solid color.  When the pop up window appears type in FFFFFF and click ok.

Drag paper 24 into your tag.  Hold down the shift key and pull up and down on the corners until the paper fills the canvas.  Click the check mark.

Drag Mizteeques mask into the tag.  Hold down the shift key and pull up and down on the corners until the paper fills the canvas.  Click the check mark.

Now in the Layers pallet, select the Channels tab.  You will see four mask layers.  We are going to work with the RGB layer.
Holding down the Ctrl key, click on the RGB mask thumb nail.  You should see marching ants.
Now click on the Layers tab.  You should still see marching ants.  Select the paper layer.  Go to Layers>Layer Mask>Reveal selection.
You can now delete the original mask above the paper layer as we no longer need it.

Drag element 86 into the tag.  Resize 50% and move to the top of the mask.

Drag element 60 into the tag.  Resize 25% and move to the top left of the mask.

Drag element 127 into the tag.  Resize 25% and move to the top of the cog cluster.

Drag element 93 into the tag.  Resize 17% and move to the middle left of the feather.

Drag element 26 into the tag.  Resize 10% and move to the bottom of the feather.

Drag element 65 into the tag.  Resize 60% and move to the top of the mask.

Select the layer under the frame.  Drag paper 23 into the tag and resize 50%.  Move to the center of the frame.

Select the frame layer.  Using the magic wand, click in the center of the frame.  Select>Modify>Expand by 3.

Select the paper layer.  Layers>Layer Mask>Reveal selection.

Select the frame layer.

Drag element 47 into the tag.  Resize 49% and move to the bottom center of the frame.

Drag element 50 into the tag.  Resize 47% and move to the bottom center of the frame.

Drag element 25 into the tag.  Resize 7% and move to the left side of the frame by the watch.

Drag element 101 into the tag.  Resize 25% and move to the left side of the frame at the bottom of the flower.

Drag element 129 into the tag.  Resize 35% and move to the left side of the frame.

Drag element 113 into the tag.  Resize 24% and move to the bottom right of the cameo.

Drag element 122 into the tag.  Resize 17% and move to the bottom left of element 113.

Drag element 5 into the tag.  Hold down the Ctrl key and pull on the corners until you find a size you like.  Mine is approx 160% and move to the bottom left of the cupcake.

Drag element 28 into the tag.  Resize 17% and move to the bottom left corner of the frame.

Drag element 80 into the tag.  Resize 28% and move to the bottom of the rose.

Drag element 20 into the tag.  Resize 40% and move to the right of the mask by the word photographer.

Drag element 89 into the tag.  Resize 37% and move over the top left of the heart.

Drag element 59 into the tag.  Resize 40%, mirror and move over the heart.

Drag element 98 into the tag.  Resize 13% and move to the bottom left of the horse.

Drag element 94 into the tag.  Resize 35% and move to the bottom of the books.

Drag element 45 into the tag.  Resize 20% and move to the bottom of the books.

Drag element 84 into the tag.  Resize 20% and move to the bottom right of the bottles.

Drag element 79 into the tag.  Resize 22% and move to the bottom of the envelop.

Drag element 39 into the tag.  Resize 31% and move to the bottom of the frame.

Open the tube in PS.  Select each layer by holding down the Ctrl key and then hit Ctrl + G on the keyboard.
Then drag the group layer into your tag.  Right click on the group and convert to smart object.
Resize 40%, mirror and move to the right of the frame.

Drag element 73 into the tag.  Resize 25% and move to the bottom right of the tube.

Drag element 43 into the tag.  Resize 65% and move to the bottom of the tube.

Drag element 76 into the tag.  Resize 23% and move to the right of element 83.

Drag element 124 into the tag.  Resize 13% and move to the left of element 76.

Drag my Wordart into the tag.  Move to the bottom of the tag.  See mine for placement.

Drag element 52 into the tag.  Resize 16% and move to the bottom right of wordart.

Drag element 21 into the tag.  Resize 7% and move to the bottom right of wordart.

Drag element 35 into the tag.  Resize 6% and move to the bottom right of flower.

Drag element 32 into the tag.  Resize 32% and move to the bottom right of word art between the A & M.

Drag element 62 into the tag.  Resize 10% and move to the bottom left of the phone.

Drag element 109 into the tag.  Resize 64% and move to the bottom of the phone.

Drag element 88 into the tag.  Resize 18% and move to the bottom of the picture.

Add any other elements you like and make any adjustments to the layers.

Crop away any extra space.

Image, Image Size and resize 650 on the longest side.

Oh almost forgot we need to drop shadow all of our elements.  I actually do the drop shadow at the end :)

Select the element on the bottom of your tag in the layer pallet and double click it.

A layer style window will pop up.  Click on Drop shadow. and use the following settings.

Now right click on the layer you just applied the drop shadow.  Click copy layer style.

Now click on the layer above and hold down the shift key, select the layer under the paper layer.  Rick click and paste layer styles.

Select the frame layer, holding down the shift key, select the top layer.  Right click and paste layer styles.  Drop shadow complete :)

Select the tube layer, right click and duplicate.

Standing on the duplicate layer, right click and clear layer style.  Go to Filter, Blur, Gaussian Blur and type in 3.  Click ok.  Change the blend mode to soft light.

Add your copyright and name.

If you do not want to animate.  Hide the white background layer Save your tag and export as png.

Might want to grab a coffee :)

Make sure the Animation Timeline is open.  If you do not see it at the bottom of PS, go to Window>Timeline

In the timeline window click the drop down in the middle and select Create Frame Animation.

There should be one frame in the timeline.

Ready to learn something kewl :).

We are going to animate the horse so it looks like it is moving up and down.

In the layer pallet, select the horse layer (element 59).  Just highlight it and don't move it.

Next,  In the timeline duplicate your frame. It is the + by the garbage can.  I think in older versions it looks like stacked paper.

You should now have two frames in the animation pallet.  Select frame 2.  Here is where stuff gets neat.  Remember Ctrl + Z is your friend when you make an error.

Standing on Frame 2 in the timeline.  Make sure element 59 is still highlighted in the layers pallet.  Using your up arrow key on the Keyboard, move the horse to the highest
position you would like the horse.  See my screen shot are below for an approx visual for positioning.

Now select frame 1 in the timeline.  We are going to create the animation.

On the right side of the timeline is an icon with four lines on it.  Click it and select Tween.

When the window pops up use the following settings.  I want 5 frames between the first frame and the second frame.

Click ok and you should now have 7 frames in the Timeline.  We are not done yet.

Select frame 7 in the timeline and select tween again.

When the window pops up, select the drop down and select first frame.  All other settings stay the same.

You should now have 12 frames in the timeline.

Now to set the time delay.

Select the first frame in the timeline.  Hold down the shift key and select the 12th frame.  Now click on the little down arrow beside the 0.0.

When the pop up window appears select 0.2 Sec.
Now click on the play button to view the animation.  Click on it again to stop it.

Click frame 1 again so we don't accidentally make any changes.

Now to save our tag as a gif.

Go to File>Export>Save as Web (Legacy).

A new pop up window will appear.  Change the settings to my screen shot below.  Click on the image to enlarge it if needed.  Click save.  My screen shot will look different but the settings are the same.

I hope you have enjoyed my tutorial.  I would love to see your results.
